The state-owned lender United Bank of India, is likely to come out with its initial public offering (IPO) by the 1st week of January, 2009, as per its executive director, TN Bhasin, reports Financial Express.
The bank said it would offer 50 million shares of face value Rs 10 each. The bank had requested the govt for infusing of Tier-I capital of Rs 8 billion. “This is in addition to Rs 5.5 billion of innovative perpetual debt instrument expected to be infused in 2009-10.“ said the bank.
Following the capital infusion, the statement said the bank was confident of maintaining capital to risk asset ratio of over 12% till March 2012.

President Zuma praises IPL for reviving South African economy
Johannesburg, May 25 (IANS) South African President Jacob Zuma Sunday thanked the Indian Premier League (IPL) for reviving the country’s economy ahead of the 2010 FIFA World Cup.
The Twenty20 tournament, which concluded Sunday, was shifted to South Africa after it overlapped with the general elections in India.
“The month-long IPL has revived the country’s economy. It has boosted the South African economy by 1 billion rand with the number of hotel rooms booked and the number of flights that were added. It has given a fillip to South African tourism.
“The IPL was a great advertisement for next month’s Confederations Cup and the 2010 FIFA World Cup,” Zuma said in his speech at the IPL’s closing ceremony.
“We will be happy to organise it again if the need arises in the future.”
Zuma, the leader of the African National Congress, said the IPL has become quite popular in the rainbow country during the 37-day tournament.
“The tournament has become a household name in a very short time. People are aware of all eight teams that participated. It is a favourite here now. It brought cities to a halt during the matches,” Zuma said.
“It was a very difficult job for us to prepare everything at such short notice, including eight stadiums. I thank the organisers for a wonderful job. I also appreciate the presence of the Bollywood stars like Preity Zinta and Shilpa Shetty.”

Colombo international airport continues to be secy fortress Curtains on the 30-year-old civil war may have come down with the end of the LTTE, but the Bandaranaike International Airport in Colombo continues to be a virtual fortress with gun-totting security personnel manning the complex round-the-clock not wanting to take any chances.
The only international airport in Sri Lanka, located on the outskirts of Colombo, was targeted by LTTE twice.
“The situation is 90 per cent safe. But we don’t want to take chances,” said an army commando at the airport.
The security at the international airport was tightened after two light-weight LTTE aircraft struck the Sri Lankan military base inside the airport in March 2007.
In February this year, anti-aircraft guns shot down a LTTE plane near an air force base in Katunayake, close to the international airport.
Vehicles coming inside the airport complex continue to be checked minutely with security officials insisting on identity cards on suspicion.
The drill of focused checking, which was introduced to dodge any LTTE suicide bombers from sneaking in, continues unhampered.
“On any particular day we restrict entry of cars and taxis inside the airport and the passengers have to take the air-conditioned feeder service with helpers to offload their luggages from the vehicles,” a security official said.
Even as celebrations continue across the country to mark the end of LTTE, the army is taking its time in lowering the guard.
As late as February this year, the Sri Lankan troops had uncovered a possible rebel aircraft research wing to study ways to either repair the planes or to create new ones with the help of brochures.
The skeletal parts and several partly burnt pieces of a fuselage and a rotor blade of an air craft were found in a ram-shackled centre in the region.
“We are used to this kind of a drill at the Colombo international airport. We have no problems. Safety is important,” said a foreign national.
The security forces also continue with the random checking of vehicles plying on the road leading to the Bandaranaike International Airport.
The relatively relaxed atmosphere is of course visible at the airport with security personnel sharing a lighter moment and chatting with each other.
“We will be continue to be vigilant. There could still be some sleeping LTTE cells,” said another personnel.
He, however, admitted that it would just require an order from a senior LTTE leader for any rebel suicide bomber to give effect to any plan to undertake attacks.
But people widely believe none of the top LTTE leaders are alive.

AT&T likely to take over Alltel in area coverage by 2010
Just in time for Christmas 2010, Verizon Wireless service in Pratt, surrounding counties and most of western Kansas will be switching to AT&T.
A definitive agreement was reached May 8 for AT&T to purchase Verizon Wireless assets for $2.35 billion in cash.
The transaction is not finalized and will have to have regulatory approval before the purchase is complete, said Kerry Hibbs, AT&T spokesman.
The final approval and acquisition should be complete by the end of 2009 with the conversion to AT&T service expected to take until the end of 2010, Hibbs said.
Verizon purchased Alltel earlier this year. The AT&T purchase will affect 1.5 million Alltel customers in 79 service areas across 18 states including practically the entire western half of Kansas including Pratt, Barber, Comanche, Edwards, Kiowa and Stafford Counties.
“This will have a big impact on western Kansas,” Hibbs said.
It is unknown at this time the order counties and towns will switch over to AT&T service.
As part of Verizon/Alltel purchase agreement Verizon is required to sell 79 Alltel services areas to meet regulatory approvals.
AT&T won the bid for those markets and once the purchase is approved will make a change over in service that is not expected to take more than 12 months, Hibbs said.
The change over is expected to require a capital investment of $400 million.
It is too early to determine what impact, if any, the change over will have on customer’s bills but AT&T has a wide variety of service plans, Hibbs said.
When the AT&T system is in place the new customers, mostly rural, will have access to the “world’s fastest 3G network” for smartphones, including iPhones, free Wi-Fi service at over 100,000 hotspots, retail stores, hotels, airports and other locations around the planet and be able to take advantage of AT&T rollover minutes, Hibbs said.
Customers don’t need to run out and pick up an iPhone just yet but subscribers will be able to enjoy largest 3G network in the nation. The worldwide network features high-speed data transmission for sending pictures, graphics and data.
It will be some time before customers have any decisions to make. When the time comes they will be notified.
“As we get closer to something actually happening, Alltel customers will get notification from AT&T,” Hibbs said. “The change over will be seamless for customers. There’s nothing the consumer has to do or worry about.”
The states affected by the acquisition are Alabama, Arizona, California, Colorado, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, North Dakota, South Dakota, Tennessee, Utah, Virginia and Wyoming.

Miss America 2009 Winner
22-year-old Katie Stam of Indiana has been crowned Miss America 2009 in Las Vegas on Saturday night.
"That beauty that you feel on the inside, it's that confidence, that radiance inside of you, that's what glamour is," Miss Indiana Stam said. She also won Tuesday night’s swimsuit preliminary round.
“That beauty that you feel on the inside, it’s that confidence, that radiance inside of you, that’s what glamor is,” Stam said.
Katie Stam is a communications major at the University of Indianapolis, and is an aspiring weather girl broadcaster, having interned at two Indianapolis TV stations.
Her prize: a $50,000 scholarship and one year of travel and public appearances.
The first runner-up was Miss Georgia Chasity Hardman.
